What was your last vacation … or one before last … or one before before last? I believe they all were about the same – hotels, rental cars, coaches, sightseeing etc. – just maybe different locations. Did you set aside daily problems over money, job, family stress, etc. while at vacation? Do you stop dwelling in the past or worrying about the future when you travel? In fact, answer is obvious, – most people say after returning from another vacation journey that now they need to relax, to take a rest. So, why do you need this old tired vacation if it does not give you a retreat?
Real retreats are when you can focus solely on yourself, feel the NOW and restart your personal development. Vacation is the best time to explore your inner needs – be cleansed and energized. Some people may have a truly unique retreat for their body, mind and spirit in a pure and rustic retreat just in their normal life. They learn about values, renewal, tranquility, ancestral lore and more every day. I am talking about Buddhist monks that live in sacred forest temples in Asia.
While traveling in South East Asia I met a lots of western people who shaved their heads and wear orange robes. Why Buddhism becomes more and more popular among western people? This happens for a number of reasons. it happens because Buddhism provides answers to some problems, that are not addressed in our materialistic societies or in our religious or social beliefs. It also includes (for those who are interested) a deep understanding of the human mind (and natural therapies) which prominent psychologists around the world are now discovering to be both very advanced and effective.
If you want to begin a personal experience of Buddhism outside of books, then living amongst Buddhist monks in temple is an ideal starting point. When you are surrounded by this authentic culture and live in a unique, safe, and nurturing environment, you feel really safe and renewed. Monks don’t live in a spa – accommodations in monastery are not exactly luxurious. But everybody stay in his/her own small room, while men and women are housed separately.
Still reading? Be warned also that the temple is a sacred site to the monks who dwell there, so quests are expected to abide by certain rules. Absolutely no alcohol or drugs are permitted. Quiet, respectful behavior and modest dress (simple white or blue attire) are appreciated. It’s preferably not to use cosmetics or bodily adornments. No eating served after noontime, but light beverages may be kept in houses if you are not ready for this. Enjoy the forest but do not spoil the habitat or disturb the animals that live there.
Do you know how to find Buddhist forest temple for retreat? Unfortunately, it’s not as easy, since there is no directories available. But I was lucky to find one small company in Thailand called Namotours.
