Thinking of moving to Thailand after uni, would you or would you not and why?
I’m not fluent but im getting that way in the language…i have a few thai friends although they don’t live there anymore but they still love going back there, i’ve been there quite a few times and seen the place a lot. I was thinking Chiang mai..I think the place has a nice vibe–and the people seem nicer..But i want a place with maybe some beaches and good shopping. Im going to be a doctor. I can’t stand small little places so it has to be a reasonable place. Good hospital. i know i won’t get payed as much as back in australia but oh well. I’m willing to get retrained there if need be.
but what do you think? would you do this and why or why not? Any tips?
Ohh haha thanks for your answers so far. This is just a dream so far so nothing will happen for a few more years and not until i’ve had some experience working in australia …when i mentioned uni…i meant med school…i guess uni is shorter haha…yeah next years my last year.
There’re quite slim chances that, as a doctor, you might get a job in Thailand. Thinking this way, a firm in Thailand can only hire a number of expats as a percentage to Thai:- I’m not sure, but may be about 5-7%. A newly graduated Thai doctor will need to do intern, I think 2 years, and as all Thai medical students are on scholarship from the Government, they would then have to serve some years in hospitals where they’re assigned to, usually by ticket drawing and that may take about 2-5 years. I have a relative who was assigned to a hospital in Buriram province. He served there throughout his career, now retired with the last appointment as the director of that hospital.
You may have a slim chance getting a job in Thailand’s hospital but you’d need to be a specialist that Thailand doesn’t have, or in dire need for it.
Cardiac doctors who specialised in heart surgery are actually in great demand, and equipments in hospitals in Thailand is quite up to date with the world advanced hospitals. You would make heap sum of money as well, but surely you will have to be very very good. They are passing a law now that patient can sue doctor, but details are not available at the moment, although I’ve seen news of protests by medical staff.
Frankly, there are quite a large number of expat living and working with decent salary (much higher than locals). Those I’ve seen are engineers with expertise in oil and gas drilling, international marketing and product manager working in multinational firms like Uniliver, and so on. So, you may get a chance also working in large pharmaceutical companies or large hospitals, but those available jobs will most likely be in Bangkok.
